Platforms PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC
Guide type Naval Combat / Jackdaw Upgrades
Best early upgrade focus Hull survivability, cargo storage, broadside damage, then longer-range and utility tools.
Core combat loop Check the target, win the angle, fire in clean windows, brace incoming damage, disable, board, repair and reinvest.
Spoiler level Low. This guide avoids late-story mission details and legendary ship specifics.

Start With the Jackdaw Loop

Naval combat is easier when you stop treating every fight as a damage race. The safest route is a repeatable loop.

  1. Check the water first. Before firing, look for nearby ships, forts, storms and shallow turns that could trap the Jackdaw.
  2. Pick one target. Early on, isolate smaller ships instead of starting fights in the middle of a busy convoy.
  3. Win the angle. Turn so your broadside can connect cleanly, then fire when the enemy is exposed instead of wasting shots during a bad turn.
  4. Brace through obvious volleys. If the enemy has a clear shot, prepare for the hit, preserve health, then answer after the impact.
  5. Disable before boarding. Boarding is the reward phase, not the panic button. Weaken the target and make sure nearby threats are under control.
  6. Repair and reinvest. Use boarding rewards and captured resources to repair the Jackdaw, expand storage and buy the next survivability or damage upgrade.

Best Jackdaw Upgrade Order

The exact costs and unlock timing depend on your progress, but the early priority should stay simple: survive longer, carry more, then hit harder.

Priority Upgrade Focus Buy It When Why It Matters
1 Hull armor and survivability As soon as naval fights start lasting more than a few volleys. More durability gives you time to learn firing angles, brace timing and boarding setup without restarting every mistake.
2 Cargo and storage capacity Before long farming loops or multi-ship routes. Better storage means fewer wasted materials when you plunder ships and return to port with upgrades in mind.
3 Broadside damage Once the Jackdaw can survive a normal exchange. Most ship fights are won by turning broadside windows into decisive damage.
4 Close-range and weakpoint damage After broadside timing feels consistent. Resynced adds 8-pounders that can open more weakpoints in enemy hulls, so learn how to exploit exposed ships.
5 Long-range pressure When tougher enemies punish direct approaches. Longer-range pressure lets you soften targets before committing the Jackdaw to a dangerous broadside lane.
6 Utility tools and officer synergy After your basic hull, storage and damage are stable. Ubisoft says Resynced adds Jackdaw officers with special naval abilities, so fold these into your build after the ship can already survive.

Going for Ship This?

The Silver Ship This trophy requires every functional Jackdaw tier, not just a strong combat build. The final upgrade sweep opens after Sequence 6 and needs all 12 Ultimate Plans.

  • Six plans come from Diving Bell shipwrecks. Finish Sequence 6, Memory 1 before starting the complete route.
  • Six plans come from Treasure Maps. Collect each map before visiting its buried chest.
  • Max the Great Inagua Harbourmaster. Its development level gates the highest ship tiers.
  • Buy every tier. Ultimate Plans unlock upgrades but do not install them for free.

Use the New Resynced Naval Tools

Ubisoft describes Resynced naval combat as reworked, with new secondary weapons and faction variety. Treat the new tools as tactical options, not buttons to mash.

Shrapnel barrels

Shrapnel barrels explode and damage enemy sails. Use them when you want to slow a ship, disrupt its movement, or make the next broadside setup easier.

8-pounders

8-pounders can open more weakpoints in enemy hulls. Save them for moments when the target is exposed and you can follow up before it turns away.

Enemy faction differences

Ubisoft says enemy ships and factions now have different equipment depending on alliances. If a route suddenly feels harder, change water, upgrade, or isolate the easiest ship first instead of forcing the same approach.

Jackdaw officers

Resynced adds officers you can locate and assign to the Jackdaw, each with a special naval ability. Build around them after your core upgrades are stable, because a special ability is more useful on a ship that can already survive the exchange.

Boarding and Resource Farming

The best early farming route is boring in the right way: pick fights you can finish consistently, then spend the haul before taking bigger risks.

  • Farm ships below your stress level. If a fight requires perfect bracing, it is not your farming target yet.
  • Board instead of sinking when practical. Boarding can convert a disabled ship into repairs and better rewards, which keeps the route going.
  • Leave space around the target. A perfect boarding setup can collapse if another ship drifts into range and starts firing while you are committed.
  • Return to upgrade often. Do not sail around with enough materials for a major hull or storage upgrade. Spend them and make the next loop easier.
  • Use ship fast travel for cleanup. Ubisoft added ship fast travel for the Jackdaw, which makes repeated upgrade runs less tedious once your map opens up.

When to Lower Naval Difficulty

Resynced lets you tune naval, ground, activity and stealth difficulty separately, so you can fix the part that is blocking you without flattening the whole game.

Lower naval difficulty if you understand the upgrade loop but still get deleted by normal ship encounters, if storms and enemy volleys are making fights unreadable, or if you simply want the Caribbean exploration to stay relaxed. You can keep sword combat or stealth higher while making sea battles more forgiving.

Pathfinder and autopilot also help with route pressure. Pathfinder can draw a sea route toward your marker, while autopilot can command the Jackdaw to follow that route. Use those for travel, but take manual control before starting a serious fight.

Beginner Sea Route

Use this route when the Caribbean opens and you want the Jackdaw to feel stronger without wandering into late-game trouble.

  1. Follow the story until the Jackdaw systems are properly introduced. Do not grind before the game has taught the ship loop.
  2. Practice against smaller isolated ships. Focus on bracing, broadside timing and clean boarding rather than speed.
  3. Buy hull, storage and broadside upgrades first. This turns every future resource route into a safer and more profitable loop.
  4. Test shrapnel barrels and 8-pounders in easy fights. Learn what they do before you need them against a serious target.
  5. Come back for tougher ships later. If a ship forces repeated reloads, mark the area mentally and return after the Jackdaw has a stronger hull and better damage.
  6. Save legendary-style challenges for a dedicated build. Do not treat endgame naval targets as normal upgrade checks.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not spend all resources on cosmetics early. New Jackdaw skins and ship pets are fun, but survivability and storage make the whole game smoother.
  • Do not board while surrounded. Disable the target, stabilize the area, then board.
  • Do not ignore bracing. Bracing turns obvious incoming damage into something manageable, especially before hull upgrades stack up.
  • Do not chase high-level ships out of pride. The upgrade loop exists because some water is meant for later.
  • Do not use autopilot into danger. Autopilot helps you travel. It does not replace combat positioning.
  • Do not starve the Jackdaw for Edward upgrades. Edward’s gear matters, but the ship controls most of your exploration freedom.

Naval Combat and Jackdaw Upgrades FAQ

What should I upgrade first on the Jackdaw?

Upgrade hull survivability first, then cargo storage and broadside damage. That order keeps you alive, prevents wasted materials, and makes every future ship fight easier.

How do I survive naval combat early?

Fight isolated smaller ships, turn before firing, brace predictable volleys, board only when the area is safe, and spend resources on Jackdaw durability before cosmetic or late-game upgrades.

Are shrapnel barrels and 8-pounders new in Resynced?

Yes. Ubisoft describes both as new secondary weapons in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced: shrapnel barrels damage sails, while 8-pounders open more weakpoints in enemy hulls.

Should I lower naval difficulty?

Lower naval difficulty if ship fights are blocking progress but you still enjoy ground combat or stealth. Resynced lets you adjust naval, ground, activity and stealth difficulty separately.

When should I fight legendary ships or top-tier naval targets?

Wait until the Jackdaw has strong survivability, reliable damage and enough tools for long fights. Treat those battles as dedicated challenges, not early upgrade checks.

Does autopilot win naval fights for me?

No. Autopilot helps the Jackdaw follow a GPS route for travel. Take manual control before combat so you can choose angles, brace, fire and board at the right time.
