This Ocarina of Time walkthrough hub gives you the clean route through Link’s full adventure, from the Kokiri Forest opening through the final climb inside Ganon’s Castle. Use it as the parent route page: it explains dungeon order, major items, child/adult progression and where future dungeon-specific walkthroughs should connect.

How To Use This Walkthrough
Ocarina of Time is easiest to follow when you separate the game into two major phases: child Link and adult Link. Child Link’s route teaches basic items and opens the story, while adult Link’s route is built around temples, medallions and returning to older areas with new tools.
This page is not meant to replace every future dungeon guide. Instead, it keeps the route clear and links the whole Ocarina of Time guide cluster together. Dungeon pages can later expand each temple with maps, screenshots, skulltulas, heart pieces and boss strategies.

Use this walkthrough order to move from the opening forest route to the final boss.
Child Link Route
The child route starts in Kokiri Forest and gradually opens Hyrule Field, Hyrule Castle, Kakariko Village, Death Mountain and Zora’s Domain. Your goal is to collect the three Spiritual Stones, learn the early songs and understand how each basic item changes exploration.
Kokiri Forest to Hyrule Castle
Start by collecting the Kokiri Sword, buying the Deku Shield and entering the Great Deku Tree. After the first dungeon, leave the forest, cross Hyrule Field and meet Princess Zelda at Hyrule Castle. This sets up the Spiritual Stone route and gives you Zelda’s Lullaby, one of the most important songs in the game.
Spiritual Stones and Early Dungeons
The first major objective is collecting the Kokiri’s Emerald, Goron’s Ruby and Zora’s Sapphire. These are tied to the Great Deku Tree, Dodongo’s Cavern and Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly. Each dungeon teaches a different style of Zelda puzzle design: forest basics, bombs and switches, then carrying and escort-style puzzle logic.
| Order | Dungeon / Area | Main Reward | Route Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Inside the Great Deku Tree | Kokiri’s Emerald | Learn basic combat, slingshot puzzles and web drops. |
| 2 | Dodongo’s Cavern | Goron’s Ruby | Get bombs and learn explosive puzzle routes. |
| 3 | Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly | Zora’s Sapphire | Use Boomerang routes and carry Princess Ruto through the dungeon. |
After all three Spiritual Stones are collected, return toward Hyrule Castle to trigger the story transition. This is the point where the game shifts from child exploration into the adult temple route.
Adult Link Route
After pulling the Master Sword, Link wakes as an adult and the structure changes. Adult Link’s journey is built around temples, medallions and using new items to revisit areas that were previously blocked. The Hookshot, bow, hammer, iron boots, lens and mirror shield all become route-defining tools.
Your first adult goal is to reconnect with Kakariko Village, get the Hookshot from the graveyard and move toward the Forest Temple. From there, the game opens wider, but a sensible temple order keeps item requirements clean.
Recommended Temple Order
Ocarina of Time allows a little flexibility, but the smoothest route follows the item logic closely. This order avoids most backtracking and keeps the difficulty curve readable.
Forest Temple
Begin with the Forest Temple after getting the Hookshot. The route teaches adult dungeon navigation, Poe hunting and bow-based puzzles. It also brings the story back to the Lost Woods and Sacred Forest Meadow.
Fire Temple
Move to Death Mountain and Goron City for the Fire Temple. The Megaton Hammer changes combat and puzzle interactions, and the temple introduces rescue objectives alongside dungeon progression.
Water Temple
The Water Temple is the main routing test of the game. Use the Iron Boots, water level changes and careful key tracking. Future child pages should give this dungeon a dedicated step-by-step route because it is one of the most common progression blockers.
Shadow Temple
After key Kakariko events, use the Lens of Truth and hover boots route through the Shadow Temple. This dungeon is more combat-heavy and benefits from extra hearts, fairies and confidence with timing.
Spirit Temple
The Spirit Temple uses both child and adult Link. Complete the child-side setup first, then return as adult Link with the Silver Gauntlets route opened. This is one of the best late-game dungeons because it tests nearly every major skill.
When To Do Side Content
Side content is best handled in batches. Ocarina of Time has heart pieces, Gold Skulltulas, Great Fairy upgrades, masks, bottles, songs and optional item upgrades. If you stop after every dungeon to clear everything, the route can feel slow. If you ignore all side content, later temples can feel harsher than necessary.
- Do early bottles and useful songs as soon as they fit naturally. Bottles give you fairies, potions and quest flexibility.
- Collect easy heart pieces during area visits. Save awkward mini-game or late-item pieces for cleanup.
- Grab Gold Skulltulas in dungeons while you are already there. This reduces backtracking later.
- Visit Great Fairies when new items or songs open the route. Magic and defensive upgrades are worth the detour.
Ganon’s Castle and Final Route
After the medallion route is complete, head to Ganon’s Castle. The castle is structured around barrier trials that test your major dungeon tools. Bring fairies, arrows, magic, upgraded defense if available and a comfortable sword/shield setup.
The final climb is mostly a combat and resource check. Take your time, keep healing available and do not enter the final sequence underprepared. Once the boss sequence begins, focus on safe positioning and using the tools the game has taught you throughout the route.

Ocarina of Time Walkthrough FAQ
What is the recommended dungeon order in Ocarina of Time?
The smooth route is Great Deku Tree, Dodongo’s Cavern, Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly, Forest Temple, Fire Temple, Water Temple, Shadow Temple, Spirit Temple and then Ganon’s Castle.
Can you do the adult temples in a different order?
There is some flexibility, but the recommended order follows item requirements and avoids unnecessary backtracking for most players.
Why is the Water Temple so easy to get stuck in?
The Water Temple depends on water level changes, key tracking and vertical routing. Missing one small-key path can make the whole dungeon feel confusing.
Should I collect Gold Skulltulas during the walkthrough?
Yes, collect easy Skulltulas while you are already inside dungeons or passing through areas. Save awkward cleanup for a dedicated Skulltula guide.
What should I do before Ganon’s Castle?
Bring fairies, arrows, magic, strong defense, enough hearts and any useful Great Fairy upgrades you have unlocked.
